This week we had to think and read about the tv series 24. I have only seen the first season of he show. After that the show started getting a little out there for my taste. I find it interesting that when we hear about torture we automatically think about water boarding but we don't think about all the torture and villance that are in childrens cartoons. But getting back to 24. The first season was great. Jack was trying to save the life of the president who happened to be African American. The first season was not to over the top Jack most of his information without to much torture. Now from the previews that I have seen there is a lot of hunt them down and get the information anyway posable. The human race have been tortureing each other since the beginning of time. We are just now looking at it as a bad thing. For most people that are tortured it is not the acual act of torture it is the thought of it that gets people to talk. Jack the chareter has evolved from being a good guy to a guy that will do any thing to get the job done no matter what. Has Jack changed a lot or a little since the first season?

Cindy,
ReplyDeleteYou always have interesting thoughts on our subjects! I agree with you that the first season of 24 was much different that the subsequent seasons. As I said in my blog, my husband asked that we stop watching the show (on DVD) because of the torture scenes. I had no problem with that, but honestly hadn’t even noticed the increase in violence on the show. I guess the entire show just sort of numbed my brain (that or I was busy working at my desk while the TV was on and just wasn’t paying attention!
At any rate, I think your question is a good one: Has Jack changed a lot or a little since the first season? My opinion is that he has changed quite a bit. I think there is a noticeable change in the degree of violence and torture. I doubt I would have been interested in watching the entire first season of the show if the violence had been so great in Season One. It seems like the character has gotten more aggressive and more violent, and apparently that is fine with the viewing public. Certainly, there are some folks who won’t watch it due to the violence, and some people who won’t watch because of the torture scenes. I won’t watch because I have better things to do with my time than to glorify something that I object to very much (torture).
I think Jack should take a lesson from Buffalo Bill. Even though Buffalo Bill was mostly fictionalized, at least people could take a child to see his show. I wouldn’t want my children to watch 24 until they are out of my house! As a matter of fact, I guess I’d be happy if my children never saw the show at all (and they are all over the age of 25)!
